Basics amidst paradox of choice...
Dear Readers,
The paradox of choice - as we are all aware of it - is the doom of freedom. The intention behind bringing variety to the table was to have the freedom to choose what best serves our needs. To maximize freedom, it was necessary to maximize choices. What actually happened, through modern progress, is now we have so much to choose from that it's a real stress in the modern world.
In this video, Barry Schwartz shares in detail how too many choices create paralysis for everyone in society.
Today we face this paradox in everything, from choosing what to watch on Netflix to picking a song to hum to while you cook. Consumers are at the end of this long stick and they are anything but satisfied.
This applies to art and creativity as well. Readers, listeners, viewers - everyone is facing a tall supermarket shelf filled with thousands of choices. The audience is dizzy and feels exhausted just by the thought of shuffling through these options. And instead of suffering from making this difficult and time-consuming choice, the audience picks whatever’s closest.
So how do you, as a creator, overcome this paradox of choice? You can’t eliminate choices - that’s not in your hand. The idea of nitpicking and choosing only the top is, to quote Barry, “so deeply embedded in our water supply” that even when the consumer is picking the closest choice, he’s still picking the best among the closest.
What you can do to escape this is to become both the top and the closest choice. To become the former, create quality content that your audience is looking for and to become the latter, increase your discoverability. Reach your audience instead of them searching for you. When our own progressions challenge us, we go to the basics and do what we were always supposed to. So instead of running in all directions and pulling all sorts of hacks, stick to the basics!
