Fast, Cheap and Good - pick two!
Dear Readers,
When asked if there were any words of advice that he always followed, Tom Waits shared something Jim Jarmusch once told him, “Fast, Cheap and Good...pick two words to live by.”
This is something that has become a staple in the service industry. If you read closely, you’ll notice that Jim was onto something very fundamental. He wasn’t necessarily talking about ordering food. In short, he was telling us to get our priorities straight, sacrifice a little, and make the hard choice.
That’s your creative process in a nutshell. If you prioritize quality and price, you’ll deliver late. If you prioritize speed and quality, then it won’t be cheap. If you prioritize price and speed, you’ll lose the quality.
But what if we don’t want to sacrifice any of them? What if we want Good, Cheap and Fast together. How can we stick with two of them without ever making all three work together? Not to be too ambitious, but one can always try.
It might not be possible right now when you are just starting out, but over time, we can make it work as we get a better understanding of our own creative pace and process. It's just that, to reach a point where you no longer have to sacrifice any of the three - it will take time, patience and a lot of practice of your craft.
Now let’s have a look at a few exciting things that happened this week!
